F-35A Lightning II Demo Team Podcast Talks 2019 preparations with team pilot and commander Capt. Andrew "Dojo" Olsen...For many aviation enthusiasts and airshow fans, 2020 was a waste year. Airshow after airshow has been canceled and most of us are quietly (or not so quietly) going crazy within the four walls of our homes. But what has the past year been like for airshow performers? How are they coping with the ups and downs of the 2020 airshow season?
The magazine traveled to Hill Air Force Base (Utah) to speak with pilot and F-35A Demonstration Team Commander, Maj. Kristin 'BEO' Wolfe, to find out.
In early 2019, the U.S. Air Force officially announced the establishment of the F-35A demonstration team. At the time, the team was part of the 56th Fighter Wing, based at Luke Air Force Base (AZ). At the end of the first season, the USAF announced that the team would be relocated to Hill Air Force Base (Utah) and reassigned to the 388th Fighter Wing. It also means the team will get new demos to pilot. On February 29, 2020, the U.S. Air Force announced Capt. Kristin 'BEO' Wolfe as the new commander and demonstration pilot for the F-35A demonstration team.
Major Wolf is no stranger to life in the Air Force. Her father was an F-4 Phantom WSO and later an F-15 pilot. She spent her entire childhood on Air Force bases around the world. However, it wasn't until she was in college that she became interested in flying. She joined the U.S. Air Force and landed a coveted pilot training position. After completing pilot training, she began her career flying the F-22A Raptor with the 94th Fighter Squadron.
Reasons Why The F 35 Needs A New Engine
When Major Wolf takes over the demonstration team, she looks forward to a busy first season of performances at airshows across North America. Unfortunately, that didn't turn out to be the case, and the airshow season ended before it could actually begin. "We have a lot of family time, we have a lot of practice, we practice at least once a week, but last year we played 14 aerial games and most of those games were crammed into the second half of the season," said Major Wolff. That way the team gets out of the rut of Covid.” Maj. Wolfe also mentioned that when she’s not busy with F-35A demonstration missions, she’ll be back with the 421st Fighter Squadron
Fortunately, the outlook for the 2021 airshow season looks much better. Although some air shows have been cancelled, the team has at least fourteen more air shows and Major Wolf can't wait to hit the road again to interact with the crowd. "We had a lot of driving style shows last year and we'll still be seeing a few of them this year, but audience interaction is what drives the team so we're excited to be on the road again and connect with people," she said.
During a visit to Hill Air Force Base (Utah), the magazine accepted a performance of the F-35A demonstration program. The routine of the 2021 season is the same as last year. Major Wolf explained, "Since we're not going to the same airshow this year, we wanted to show people the same cool demo."
The team also hopes to make its European debut later this year. No details yet, but keep an eye on our social media as we'll have more news as soon as details of the possible European tour are revealed.
