Police broke into a rural home on Wednesday and rescued a 4-year-old girl whose disappearance from her family's campsite on Australia's west coast more than two weeks ago shocked and captivated the nation.

Authorities wept with relief after watching body camera video of an officer picking up the girl, Cleo Smith, and hearing her say, "My name is Cleo." A 36-year-old local man was arrested following a night-time attack in the town of Carnarvon, police said on Tuesday.

The girl was reunited with her mother, Ellie Smith, and her stepfather, Jake Gliddon, soon after the rescue. "Our family is gone," the woman said on social media.
Western Australia Police Chief Chris Dawson did not say what happened to the girl. He is "as good as you could hope for," Dawson said. "This was a big problem. I won't go into detail, except to say that we are very thankful that he is alive.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison, on his way home from the United Nations climate conference in Scotland, thanked the police for finding Cleo and helping her family.

NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller said Dawson told him she broke down in tears when she was found.

Fuller called across the country from Sydney on the east coast to Perth on the west to thank Dawson for the result.
"He fell to the ground and cried, which for an ex-policeman, you don't see," Fuller told Sydney Radio 2GB. "That's saying a lot considering how much they've done to find him."
"Even though we were all waiting and praying as the days passed, I think the chances of finding him alive were slim," he added.

Dawson said the body camera footage of four officers entering the home with a search warrant and finding the girl moved her.
"It's a very exciting time. "We don't get results like this every time, and even though we were very worried, we didn't lose hope," Dawson said.
"We were looking for a needle in a haystack and we found it," Blanch told Perth Radio 6PR.
"When she said, 'My name is Cleo,' I don't think there was a dry eye in the house," said Blanche, quoting the girl's words to the police officer who held her in her arms.

"How do we know we're putting a little girl's bike in front of our tent for someone to carry?"
He also discovered that Mr Gliddon's side of the tent had been opened sometime during the night.

"He obviously didn't know which side of the tent he was on." He must have looked at ours... maybe he poked his head in and realized, "Yeah, he's not on this side" and went the other way. and there he was," he said.
"He just stepped on and grabbed our son and we were sleeping next to them all. "

Ms Smith said Mr Kelly had lied to Cleo and told her she had been removed from their family because her sister, Isla, was ill and her parents needed help.

"They were locked in a room and they were scared and they didn't know where we were," he said.
"She was very closed off about what happened. "It was like she went into survival mode and pushed it too far."
Incredibly, Ms Smith said that as soon as she was reunited with Cleo, she realized that her hair had been cut, dyed and washed.
"We saw that his hair was cut and dyed. "I think we saw little things that other people didn't see," he said.

"Day and night are different. But he is fine. He's happy, he's in good shape,'' Ms Smith said. "He is sad, he is angry. But they will get there."
"We're hoping to find somewhere that's similar to what we love and what we do because we don't want to give up everything we are and what we are," Ms Smith said.

A man jailed for kidnapping four-year-old Cleo Smith has been taken to hospital for a second time after being beaten by a fellow inmate.
Cleo went missing while on a camping trip in the countryside. He was found in the early hours of Wednesday morning when police entered a house in Carnarvon, a town about 100 kilometers south of the camp where he went missing, and found him in a bedroom.
